One of the most important skills you can develop is learning how to manage your time. The reality is that we all have a finite amount of it, so it’s up to us to decide what gets done and when. This post will help you learn some tricks for saving as much time as possible, even if you’re already pretty good at managing your time!
Time management can be a challenge for anyone with multiple jobs on their plate, but it’s especially hard for someone who has to balance work and side business.
On top of a full-time job, I have two active LLC’s that I own. One is a web development company, and the other is an influencer brand on TikTok. Learning how to effectively manage my time to harvest the success of these businesses are of utmost priority for me. This post will be beneficial to those in a similar position.
When we multitask too much, our productivity levels decrease significantly… I know this first hand. Multitasking causes us to not focus on anything in particular, instead we waste time!
One of the best ways to save time and avoid a significant decrease in productivity is to create a checklist. Checklists can help you focus on what needs done, and they also provide an easy way for others in your circle to contribute ideas.
With that checklist, it is important to learn to delegate tasks and responsibilities. If you’re the type of person who can’t sleep without making a plan for tomorrow, it’s time to practice delegating tasks in your daily life. This way you have more free hours to do what matters most or something fun! You’ll also be teaching others how they too can save their own time.
Trust me, passing off tasks to someone else has saved me too many times to count. People are a resource; learning how to collaborate with others is by far the biggest saver of time.
Two great resources for delegating tasks are Fiverr and UpWork. Fiverr offers a variety of tasks for as low as $5. UpWork has traditionally offered more skilled labor than other markets.
I’ve found that Fiverr is perfect for smaller tasks such as editing a photo or video, where UpWork is perfect for large tasks such as heavy data research, web development, consulting, and more.
Once proper tasks are delegated, it’s time to focus on your tasks! I prefer to block my tasks in hour-long sections. This allows me to focus all my attention on one item for that whole hour, then move on to the next one with ease.
I do this all on my calendar.
I use Fantastical, connect all my accounts, and block off times for my specific needs mindlessly. Fantastical is a great calendar app for the iOS suite. It integrates perfectly with iCloud and syncs with all my devices.
This is a paid app, but there are plenty free alternatives. My favorite among the free calendars is Google Calendar. Really, all calendar apps serve the same funciton, so whichever one works best for you – go for it!
Now, I know this might be a hard pill to swallow at first. Learning to discipline yourself to time block effectively is a learned skill. It will take some time to fully adjust to it, but you’ll be glad that you did! Time blocking is a great way of saving your time and energy throughout the day.
It is also important to take breathers! If we want to be productive throughout the day, it’s important that we take breaks every so often. We can’t expect to be on top of our game every second!
So, to sum it up:
- Time block on a calendar of your choosing.
- Learn to delegate tasks to others when necessary.
- Block your time in hour-long segments. It’s okay if you don’t finish something that day, as long as it isn’t pressing! It doesn’t have to be a race.
- Take occasional breaks to clear your mind.
The most important skill you can learn is how to manage your time. With a finite amount of it, it’s up to us what gets done and what doesn’t. We control our destiny – but at least we can learn to master it!
